Florida has more than 50 local Habitat for Humanity affiliates, which means there is almost certainly one operating in your county. They build new homes, repair existing ones (including post-hurricane restoration), and run ReStore shops whose sales fund construction. Habitat is not one Florida charity but a network of independent local affiliates, each a separate nonprofit serving its own county or metro. When you donate or volunteer, you are working with your local affiliate, so the first step is always finding yours through Habitat's affiliate locator.
The work itself has expanded well beyond new construction. Florida affiliates repair existing homes, including post-hurricane restoration, and the state's affordability crunch has pushed Habitat into markets like Tampa and Miami where median home prices have moved far past what a working-class family can reach through any conventional path. In those metros, a Habitat home is one of the few remaining routes to ownership.
You do not need construction experience. Build days are open to first-timers, and site supervisors assign tasks that match your skill level, from painting and landscaping to framing. Affiliates in the larger metros — Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami — run multiple build sites per weekend, so slots are usually available without a long wait.
Sign up through your local affiliate's website after finding it via the locator. Groups from workplaces, churches, and schools are common, and many affiliates also need non-construction volunteers in their offices and ReStores.
Cash gifts fund land, materials, and construction directly, either through habitat.org or your local affiliate's own donation page (local giving keeps the money in your county).
ReStores are the other channel. These thrift and salvage shops accept furniture, appliances, and building materials, then sell them to the public with proceeds funding the housing programs. If you are renovating and have usable cabinets, doors, or fixtures headed for the dumpster, a ReStore drop-off turns them into construction funding. Many locations schedule pickups for large items; check with your nearest store.
Because each Florida affiliate is its own 501(c)(3), verify the specific affiliate you are giving to in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search (apps.irs.gov) and check its Charity Navigator listing. Keep written receipts for cash or goods worth $250 or more.
