What This Site Is
LargestCharities.com is an independent research and reference site covering charitable organizations across all 50 US states. We publish state-by-state guides to the most effective local nonprofits, donation guides, and informational content related to giving and volunteering in America.
We are not a charity ourselves, not affiliated with any nonprofit, and not a fundraising platform. We do not accept money from organizations to feature them favorably. The site generates revenue through Google AdSense advertising, which allows us to keep all content free to read.
Our Mission
Finding the right charity to support is harder than it should be. The IRS recognizes over 1.1 million 501(c)(3) organizations in the US. Charity rating platforms focus mostly on the largest national organizations. Smaller but highly effective local nonprofits — food banks, housing organizations, animal rescues, mentorship programs — get less coverage even when they're the ones doing the most direct good in a specific community.
Our goal is to fill some of that gap: to provide state-by-state, cause-by-cause coverage of US nonprofits with enough specificity to actually help someone decide where their donation or volunteer time goes.
How We Research Charities
Every charity featured on this site is researched using publicly available sources. Our research process for each organization typically includes:
- Verifying 501(c)(3) status through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search
- Reviewing Form 990 filings via ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer
- Checking Charity Navigator ratings and accountability scores where available
- Reading the organization's own published annual reports and website
- Reviewing recent news coverage for program updates, leadership changes, or issues
We update content as new information becomes available. If you find an inaccuracy, please contact us and we will review and correct it.
Editorial Standards
We do not accept payment from charitable organizations for coverage. Organizations cannot pay to be included, removed, or ranked favorably. Our coverage decisions are made independently based on an organization's size, impact, and relevance to the communities we cover.
For health-related content (blood donation, plasma donation), we cite primary sources including the American Red Cross, FDA guidelines, and major donation center guidelines. This content is for informational purposes only and is not medical advice — see our Disclaimer.
Our Team
Editorial Team
Our content is researched and written by a small editorial team with backgrounds in nonprofit research, journalism, and public health. We do not publish author bylines to maintain focus on the content rather than individual contributors. For questions about specific content, contact us directly.
