Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, founded in 1989, builds homes across Miami-Dade County and sells them to families with a zero-interest mortgage, no down payment, and no mortgage insurance. Its biggest project, Habitat Acres, is a 150-townhome community now under construction. Here is how to qualify, how to apply, and how to help.
Partner families complete homeownership education, contribute sweat equity, help build their homes, and buy with a zero-interest mortgage. The affiliate states there is no down payment and no mortgage insurance, with low closing costs, and selects families on need, ability to repay an affordable mortgage, and willingness to partner.
| Requirement | Detail |

The flagship project, Habitat Acres in South Miami-Dade, is a 150-townhome community with three-bedroom, two-bath units.
You download the application, available in English and Spanish, from the affiliate's site and submit it with the required documents and a $30 money order, by mail or in person at 3800 NW 22nd Avenue. Applications are currently open for Habitat Acres.
The steps run through an inquiry and review of materials, the application, an approval review, a letter of intent, sweat equity and education, and closing.
Beyond building, Miami Habitat lists a home repair program, A Brush With Kindness, for which detailed eligibility is not published, and it has a long history of neighborhood work, including rebuilding about 200 homes after Hurricane Andrew.
The Miami Habitat ReStore is permanently closed and no longer accepts furniture or home-goods donations; the affiliate directs donors to other-affiliate ReStores in the Upper Keys and Broward and to other charities.
Volunteers must be 18 to work on their own, and those 16 and 17 may volunteer with a parent or guardian who is 21 or older. You fill out the interest form to be notified of opportunities.
Since 1989 the affiliate has partnered with more than 1,300 families and reached its 1,000th home in 2015. It holds a four-star rating from Charity Navigator with a perfect 100 percent score. Its EIN for tax-deductible gifts is 65-0108974.
