The highest-rated animal charities by independent evaluators in October 2026 include Friends of Animals and PetSmart Charities (A+ from CharityWatch), The Wild Animal Sanctuary and the Wildlife Conservation Society (A), and Best Friends Animal Society (B+ and on CharityWatch's Top-Rated list). All of them also hold four stars from Charity Navigator. For farmed animals, Animal Charity Evaluators recommends groups such as The Humane League and Wild Animal Initiative. The right pick depends on your goal: pets near you, wildlife, or animals on farms.
This table includes every animal charity on the CharityWatch Top-Rated list as of October 13, 2026, plus two U.S.-registered groups from Animal Charity Evaluators' current recommended list that have Charity Navigator ratings. Every organization in it also had four stars from Charity Navigator on the same date.

The two program-spending figures are measured differently. CharityWatch's number is the share of cash spending that went to programs in the year it graded, after it moves direct-mail and telemarketing costs out of "programs." Charity Navigator's is a three-year average of program expenses taken straight from the charity's Form 990s. A gap between the two usually means the charity counts some fundraising appeals as public education.
CharityWatch grades on money alone. It calls a charity highly efficient at 75% or more of spending on programs and $25 or less to raise $100, and its Top-Rated list adds governance and disclosure benchmarks on top of that. Charity Navigator's star rating is a score out of 100 built from four areas: accountability and finance, impact and measurement, leadership, and culture. Four stars means a score of 90 or higher.
Neither one tells you whether a program actually helps animals more than another program would. Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) tries to answer that question. It reviews groups for how much they are likely to achieve per dollar, whether they evaluate their own work, and whether they can use more funding. Its current picks focus almost entirely on farmed and wild animals rather than pets.
Ratings also lag. CharityWatch updates a grade when it analyzes a new audit, which can be a year or two after the fiscal year ends. Check the date before you rely on any grade, including the ones above.
When checked on October 13, 2026, ACE's recommended charities page still showed its 2025 list of ten groups. Several work mainly outside the United States:
ACE refreshes its list periodically, so confirm it before year-end giving. Gifts to groups registered outside the U.S. are generally not tax-deductible on a U.S. return unless they go through a U.S. intermediary; see our charitable deduction guide.
National ratings cover national organizations. Your local shelter or rescue probably has no rating at all, and it may still be where a gift does the most visible good. Local humane societies and SPCAs are usually independent nonprofits, not branches of a national group. A gift to a national organization reaches them only if that group funds them through a grant or partnership. Many local shelters also take food, blankets and supplies; our pet supply donation finder lists places that accept them. In Chicago, see PAWS Chicago.
The dog-focused groups in the table are the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, which pairs rescued dogs with firefighters for disaster search, and the pet-adoption organizations: Best Friends Animal Society, PetSmart Charities and RedRover. PetSmart Charities states that it works by supporting programs that bring people and pets together, so much of its money flows to partner groups.
The Wild Animal Sanctuary, Save the Chimps, The Marine Mammal Center, Born Free USA, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Society all hold A-range grades from CharityWatch. Sanctuaries commit to lifetime care, which means steady long-term costs.
If your aim is to help the largest number of animals, ACE's picks focus there. Friends of Animals, with an A+, works on advocacy against cruelty and exploitation.
Both are among the largest U.S. animal charities and both had four stars from Charity Navigator on October 13, 2026: the ASPCA with a score of 99% and a 75.1% program expense ratio, and Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States) with 99% and 73.3%. Neither is on CharityWatch's Top-Rated list. CharityWatch shows grades for charities outside that list only to paying members, so we do not report them here.
Sources: the CharityWatch Top-Rated list and each charity's free CharityWatch profile, Charity Navigator profiles, and ACE's recommended charities page, all checked October 13, 2026. We used ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer to match each name to its EIN so the Charity Navigator profile is the right organization. Inclusion rule: on the CharityWatch Top-Rated list, or ACE-recommended and registered in the U.S. We left out groups whose only endorsement is a paid seal or a self-reported profile.
