The Red Cross New Jersey Region responds to home fires, flooding, winter storms, and coastal disasters statewide, with Superstorm Sandy still the benchmark for how large that job can get. Blood collected at donor centers across the state supplies RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, and other New Jersey hospital systems. This page covers how to give, how to volunteer, and what to do if you need help.
New Jersey's geography stacks several disaster risks into a small area. Coastal communities face hurricane and nor'easter flooding, the Passaic River basin floods regularly during heavy rain, and dense urban neighborhoods full of older housing carry elevated fire risk.
Superstorm Sandy in 2012 remains the reference point for scale. The Red Cross's post-Sandy work helped establish the protocols the region now uses for major coastal flooding events, from mass sheltering to long-term recovery casework.
Blood from New Jersey donor centers supplies RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, and other hospital systems in the state. One advantage of New Jersey's density: donor centers are accessible from almost anywhere, without the long drives donors face in rural states.
