Alabama sits in one of the most active tornado corridors in the country. April 2011 remains the state's worst recorded tornado event, and significant outbreaks hit multiple times each decade, so the region's disaster teams deploy regularly rather than rarely. The Mobile-Tensaw river system in the southwest adds serious flooding risk.
Between major events, the day-to-day work is home fires, which are particularly common in older rural housing stock. Fire response is the same everywhere the Red Cross operates: emergency lodging, food, and recovery casework for displaced families.
