Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville, marking 40 years in 2025, builds and rehabs homes on its own land in Jefferson County and sells them with an affordable mortgage kept to no more than 28 percent of income. It runs a critical home repair program and a ReStore. Here is how to qualify, when to apply, and how to help.
Families partner with Habitat to build or rehab a home on Habitat-owned land, then buy the finished home with an affordable mortgage; those payments are reinvested into building more homes. The affiliate keeps the payment to no more than 28 percent of monthly gross income, with recent home prices running from $144,000 to $280,000. It describes the mortgage as affordable without publishing a specific interest rate.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Need | Currently in overcrowded, unsafe, or unsatisfactory housing, or paying too much rent, with income within program guidelines. |
| Income history | Steady, verifiable income for the past 12 months. |
| Credit and debt | No excessive credit card debt, no bankruptcy in the last 24 months, no repossessions or charge-offs, and no late rent. |
| Residency | Willing to live where Habitat owns property. |
| Down payment | About $2,000 toward closing costs and homeowner's insurance. |
| Sweat equity | 400 or more hours, through workshops, job sites, the ReStore, and building your own home. |
Most approved buyers move in within 12 to 18 months.
Applications open only during set periods, about once or twice a year, held in person at the affiliate's center. The path runs through an application, a credit review, an interview with the Homebuyer Selection Committee, selection, orientation and education, lot selection and building, and closing.
Reviewing an application takes about 90 to 120 days, so it is worth watching the homeownership page for the next open window.
The Critical Home Repair program handles roofs, HVAC, water heaters, windows and doors, plumbing, and accessibility work such as ramps and grab bars for income-qualified, owner-occupied homes; in 2025 it completed 158 repairs. The Love Your Neighborhood program runs resident and volunteer cleanups and beautification.
The Hikes Point ReStore at 4044 Taylorsville Road sells donated furniture, appliances, and building materials, open Tuesday through Saturday, with drop-off donations and free pickup.
Volunteers can work on construction sites at 16, with the landscaping crew open at 15 and adult supervision for minors, and at the ReStore at 12 with an adult. You start through the volunteer interest form or the online calendar.
