From Colorado Springs it serves Pueblo and 29 counties stretching from the Front Range to the San Luis Valley and the Four Corners region. Colorado Springs is the state’s second-largest city and home to a significant military population, including Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy, where some families face food insecurity. Nate Springer became President and CEO in 2022, bringing more than two decades of military leadership, most recently as garrison commander at Fort Carson.

What Care and Share does

Care and Share sources food at scale and distributes it across the southern half of Colorado through partner agencies and its own programs. The territory is large and varied, from the Colorado Springs and Pueblo metros down through the agricultural San Luis Valley to the remote Four Corners region, and the food bank leans on mobile distributions to reach communities far from any pantry.

Leadership: Nate Springer

Nate Springer became President and CEO in 2022, succeeding Lynne Telford, who led the organization for 11 years. He brought an unusual background for a food bank leader: more than two decades as a US Army commander, most recently as garrison commander of Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. That military experience is a natural fit for a region where service members’ families are part of the population the food bank serves.

Who it serves

The 29-county service area covers southern Colorado, anchored by Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The region’s large military presence, including Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy, means junior enlisted families are among those who turn to the food bank, alongside rural communities in the San Luis Valley and the Four Corners where poverty and distance compound each other.

Is it legitimate? Ratings and finances

Yes. Care and Share Food Bank is a registered 501(c)(3) and a member of the Feeding America and Feeding Colorado networks. Donors can review its financials through Charity Navigator and GuideStar. Bulk buying and donated food mean a gift produces many meals.

How to donate and volunteer

Donations and volunteer shifts run through careandshare.org. Volunteers sort and pack food and help at mobile distributions, and cash gifts go furthest because of the food bank’s purchasing power.

How it compares with other Colorado food banks

Care and Share covers the southern half of Colorado, while Food Bank of the Rockies covers the northern half and Wyoming. The two divide the state between them. For anyone in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, or southern Colorado, Care and Share is the lead organization.
