Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah (BBBSU) creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth across Utah. BBBSU operates offices in Salt Lake City (headquarters at 2121 S State Street, Suite 201), Park City, and St. George. Jill E. Sundstrom serves as CEO, having spent 25 years with BBBSU. Sundstrom has herself been a Big Sister twice: in the Site-Based program in 2008 with her Little, Melissa, and again in the mentor2.0 program in 2015. Brandi Jolley serves as Chief Development Officer since 2009, coordinating development across all three Utah offices. In 2023, BBBSU was chosen by Team LeBron to participate in NBA All-Star Weekend, a career highlight Jolley described as a dream come true as a lifelong Utah Jazz fan. Programs include community-based mentoring, Site-Based mentoring, and mentor2.0. Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraising events run in all three Utah communities.
BBBSU matches children in Utah with volunteer adult mentors who serve as consistent, caring presences in their lives. The vision is that all children achieve success in life. The mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Through shared experiences and consistent support, mentors (Bigs) help guide youth (Littles) through challenges while encouraging personal growth. BBBSU works to clear the path to a child's biggest possible future.
Jill E. Sundstrom serves as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, having spent 25 years with the organization. Her story is one of sustained investment in mentoring across multiple roles and relationships. Former CEO Pam Sanders mentored Jill for over a decade. Nancy Winemiller-Basinger, whom Jill first knew as a professor, later became her CEO and mentor for another 10 years. Both relationships shaped Sundstrom's understanding of what consistent adult investment in a young person's development looks like over time.
Sundstrom has also been a Big Sister herself, twice. In 2008, she was matched with her Little Melissa in the Site-Based program. In 2015, she became a Big Sister again in the mentor2.0 program. Her quote reflecting on Women's History Month captures her mentoring philosophy: "That's what mentorship really looks like. It's not one moment, it's something that happens over time, in different roles, with different people."
Brandi Jolley has been Chief Development Officer at BBBSU since 2009. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication from the University of Utah and previously held development positions with The Road Home, Judge Memorial Catholic High School, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake. Deeply involved in Utah's fundraising community, she has served on the boards of the Murray Chamber Women in Business and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Utah Chapter.
In 2023, BBBSU was chosen by Team LeBron to participate in NBA All-Star Weekend. As a lifelong Utah Jazz fan, Jolley described it as a dream come true and a career highlight. The NBA All-Star Weekend partnership reflects BBBSU's national standing and the recognition from the broader NBA community of BBBSU's impact.
BBBSU's three-office structure allows the organization to serve the distinct geographic and demographic communities of Utah's major population centers. The Salt Lake City headquarters serves the Wasatch Front's largest urban concentration. Park City and Summit County provide a distinct community profile: the ski resort economy, second-home owners, and seasonal worker population create a different volunteer and donor base than the year-round Salt Lake metro population.
The St. George office serves Washington County in southern Utah, the fastest-growing part of the state. The St. George metropolitan area has experienced substantial population growth driven by retirees from California and other high-cost states, remote workers, and the outdoor recreation economy. The Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraising event in St. George features sponsors including Watts Construction, Jones Paint & Glass, and Security Service Federal Credit Union.
BBBSU operates three primary mentoring programs. The community-based program is the traditional one-to-one mentoring model where Bigs and Littles plan activities of their own choosing across Utah communities. The Site-Based program matches Bigs with Littles at the Little's school or after-school program, removing transportation and scheduling barriers; CEO Jill Sundstrom was matched in the Site-Based program herself in 2008.
The mentor2.0 program is a technology-enhanced high school mentoring program that matches students with mentors for structured curriculum-based support through high school. CEO Sundstrom participated as a Big Sister in mentor2.0 in 2015. The three-program portfolio allows BBBSU to match volunteer Bigs with the program format that best fits their availability, interests, and the specific needs of waiting Littles across Salt Lake, Park City, and St. George.
Bowl for Kids' Sake is BBBSU's statewide fundraising event, held across all three Utah offices in Salt Lake, Park City, and St. George. The bowling-themed fundraiser brings together corporate sponsors, individual donors, and BBBSU supporters to raise funds for mentoring matches across Utah. The St. George session is supported by Watts Construction, Jones Paint & Glass, and Security Service Federal Credit Union. The Salt Lake and Park City sessions are also open for sponsorship coordination through CDO Brandi Jolley at [email protected].
To become a Big in Utah, visit bbbsu.org to start the volunteer application process. BBBSU operates in Salt Lake City, Park City, and St. George. The three program options (community-based, Site-Based, mentor2.0) allow Bigs to select the format that best fits their availability. The professional matching process ensures Bigs and Littles are paired based on shared interests, compatible personalities, and geographic proximity within the Utah service area.
Donations can be made at bbbsu.org. BBBSU is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Bowl for Kids' Sake sponsorships can be arranged through CDO Brandi Jolley at [email protected]. Corporate partnerships with Utah employers including Security Service Federal Credit Union, Watts Construction, and Jones Paint & Glass provide sustained corporate giving. Foundation grants and individual giving make up the broader fundraising mix. The BBBSA Fund Development Large Agency Alliance (which Jolley participates in as CDO) provides peer learning and best practices for the development function.
For pure scale of youth-serving nonprofit infrastructure in Utah, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake and the YMCA of Utah communities reach more children through after-school programming. For one-to-one structured mentoring specifically, BBBSU is the largest single agency in Utah with three offices (Salt Lake, Park City, St. George) and three programs (community-based, Site-Based, mentor2.0). Jill Sundstrom's 25-year tenure (and her own experience as a Big Sister twice), Brandi Jolley's 16-year CDO continuity, the 2023 Team LeBron NBA All-Star Weekend partner recognition, and the Bowl for Kids' Sake statewide fundraising infrastructure are BBBSU's specific advantages.
