Who We Are
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the community since 1910. Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. We believe that every child has the potential to succeed and thrive in life, regardless of their circumstances.
What We Do
We match children between the ages of 6 and 18 with caring adult volunteers who serve as mentors, or “Bigs.” Our program is based on the belief that a positive, supportive relationship with a mentor can help children overcome challenges and achieve their full potential. We offer both community-based and school-based mentoring programs, as well as specialized programs for children with specific needs.
Impact
Our mentoring programs have a proven track record of success. According to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, children who participate in our program are:
– 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
– 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
– 52% less likely to skip school
– 37% less likely to skip a class
– More confident in their academic performance
– More likely to have positive relationships with their peers and family members
