What Can Be Donated
The image at the right is a leg for a 7 year old boy that we met. It is obvious that they have tried to adjust the leg on their own but as a result is no longer functional. This is an example of how used prosthetic parts could be extremely helpful for our patients. People with cancer or undergoing surgery often need blood; so do those who lose blood due to injury or who are being treated for a blood disorder.
The SPE test all of the different types of proteins levels that are found in your plasma. If you give yourself about a week before taking a new SPE that should give your body time to recover. Remember, after your donation, the site of your needle stick will be covered with a gauze bandage and wrapped to hold the gauze in place. This bandage should be left on for 1-2 hours to ensure that the puncture site has formed a clot and any bleeding has stopped.

If you notice signs of infection, it’s important to see a doctor right away to prevent complications. Bruising and discomfort are among the milder and more common side effects of plasma donation. These are important in keeping the body alert and functioning properly. Losing some of these substances through plasma donation can lead to an electrolyte imbalance. This can result in dizziness, fainting, and lightheadedness.
- They are fairly strict, ruling out people with diseases that can be carried in milk, but also many people taking regular medications.
- In addition, please include both shoes if one is already on the foot.
- Age, eye color, and the quality of your eyesight don’t matter.

If you weren’t "permanently deferred", you should be able to donate again. I know donors who had to use one arm for both donations each week because of similar issues. If you are not sure about your status with the donation center, give them a quick call before heading out for your next donation. Surely you are well now and don’t use this wheelchair. So you can do a great job to provide this wheelchair to someone else who badly needs it. MassMATCH is one organization that takes responsibility for your used medical equipment and gives it to the right person who doesn’t afford to buy it.
Approved donors must make a donation at least once a week, usually for a period of up to a year. People with hair loss issues often seek wigs made of real human hair instead of synthetic hair. Hair that is long and has not been altered by salon processes (aka “virgin hair”) is the most sought after and fetches the highest price.
There are so many people around us who don’t afford to buy a wheelchair. LifeNets is an organization that collects medical equipment such as Wheelchair and provides it to the people who need it badly. However, several times during each donation, the draw will suddenly stop for several seconds, than slowly pick up again. Rarely I will feel a sharp pain in my upper arm and armpit region along with the sudden stop of the draw. Camarochix, thanks for answering all of these questions! My wife and I just moved to an area with a Biolife center and I have been donating for a little over two months. Most of the time, in my experience, the return speed is set too high on the machine itself. This can be an issue after some scar tissue builds up around the puncture site on your arm.
We have had to say goodbye to our beloved pup, Bentley. He had DM so we’ve used a cart for the last 8 or 9 months. We would love to pass it along to an organization that can gift it to a family in need. This group started out raising funds for Pugs in need of a cart, but they now donate new wheelchairs to every breed. Cynthia Peraza is the founder and she’s a dynamo at raising money for carts via Instagram online auctions. You can contact High Rollers Club HRC by messaging them on Instagram.
The center I went to explained to me that usually when this happens, the speed of the machine needs to be adjusted. I’ve had it happen during both the collection and return phases of the donation, and both times, after making adjustments to the machine speed itself, the pain went away. Old does not mean scrap, but this can be a blessing for someone.
