Agencies understand that foster kids need and want toys and gadgets, just like any other children, but they also need socks, backpacks, shampoo, wallets … Things that make them feel like a normal person who can move about in the world.
Your monthly donation provides vital, basic care items to a child in foster or relative care in Georgia. For as little as the price of a fancy cup of coffee a week, a sponsored child will receive a complete seasonal wardrobe, toys, books, safe care equipment, school supplies, and more! Every month we help approximately 120 youth and their foster families in Michigan. Children transitioning between foster homes and other organizations often use trash bags to carry and store their clothing. Donating a new duffel bag filled with a blanket, hygiene kit, and motivational card can go a long way to help someone make a difficult transition.
To get involved nationally, consider supporting Together We Rise. They have donated over 100,000 duffel bags to foster youth in need. It is important to note that all donations stay local and support the children and families in Jasper County, and are tax-deductible. We have a variety of programs to meet each young person where they’re at, including short-term residential care, outpatient therapies, job training, and adoptions. Foster parents often receive children in emergency situations and need assistance getting appropriate sleeping arrangements, safety items, and basic necessities. One specific donation that can greatly impact a child is the donation of a suitcase, duffel bag or backpack. While many of these kids do not have many belongings to begin with, no child should have to pack up all of their things into a trash bag. As they move to a new home or move to a different location, having a bag of their own gives them a more dignified way to transport anything they own. At KVC, we want every child and adult to be safe & connected to a strong family and a healthy community.
In addition to providing our highest needed items, please consider providing opportunities for children and youth to explore the world around them. Purchasing tickets to embark on an adventure increases their awareness of their own community and creates the best childhood memories. There are so many emotions that accompany the foster care licensing process- excitement, anxiety, hope, uncertainty. You’re getting ready to welcome children into your home and you’ve begun setting up a bedroom, but you may be unsure of what you really need. Maybe with your biological children, your family and friends threw you a baby shower. Maybe you don’t have any biological children, and you just aren’t sure what you need and what you don’t.
Monetary donations help children in foster care obtain the support they need most. The UMFS Treatment Foster Care Program works with children and teens in foster care who are working to overcome past trauma or abuse, or are struggling with behavioral or medical challenges. UMFS works hard to identify supportive foster families, and provide extensive, specialized training and comprehensive ongoing support. We need members of our incredible community to sponsor one or more children with a monthly donation of only $25 or more per month, per child.
