Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization empowering the world’s poorest people with decent housing that they can afford. They are looking at new solutions to make adequate, affordable housing accessible for all.
The housing problems are different for people in every region, so we work closely with local communities and together seek adequate solutions. We help those who need it build or repair their homes through volunteer labor that is affordable to the future homeowners.
We help make buildings more energy efficient, provide water and sanitation solutions, mitigate the effects of disasters. We also seek to influence how housing is assessed in local governments by providing a voice for vulnerable communities through our global initiatives like Shelter Cities.
The world’s “silent emergency” is a term used to describe such poor housing conditions and deprivation. This crisis affects so many millions of people worldwide, but they are often ignored or not taken seriously because it does not have the same visibility as other emergencies that affect communities more violently in comparison. But there’s hope: Habitat for Humanity is working with partners and beneficiaries alike to build a better future where everyone has access to decent shelter–a place we can call home!
